Prospective Volunteer
If you are considering getting involved you can make a real difference. Volunteering offers a unique opportunity to help shape the future of the profession, influence policy, support fellow members, and stay at the forefront of developments in taxation.
We greatly value the time and commitment our volunteers give, and in return, we aim to provide a rewarding experience.
We look forward to welcoming you to our volunteer community. If you do decide to apply, why not have a read of what some of our other volunteers have said about volunteering with us in our Branch Network testimonials.
Our current opportunities and roles are listed at the bottom of this page. If you are interested in one of our committee roles, please continue reading and complete the expression of interest form.

2. Acknowledgement and Application Review
Your application will then be acknowledged by email and reviewed by the relevant committee chair and a member of staff/secretariat.
We aim to match volunteers with opportunities that best suit their skills, interests, and experience, while also considering current needs and available voluntary roles.
3. Follow-Up Communication
The chair or member of staff may contact you for further information or to discuss your application in more detail. This helps us ensure the best possible fit between you and the volunteer opportunity.
4. Outcome Notification
You will be notified of the outcome of your application whether successful or not. We aim to do this within 4–6 weeks but timings may vary depending on the committee or opportunity applied for.
5. Getting Started
If your application is successful, we will invite you to observe a meeting and decide whether or not it is the right fit for you. Once you have "observed" a meeting you will be formally invited to join and can decide at that point whether you would like to become a member. You are then formally appointed at the next meeting.
6. Joining a committee/branch committee
This will involve you reading a few governance documents, you will also be introduced to the committee or at a meeting online or in person, and the secretariat will ask you to confirm which email address you wish to use and your permissions regarding sharing your preferred email address with other committee members.
7. Volunteer Applications – Unsuccessful Outcomes
Sometimes volunteer applications are unsuccessful due to limited vacancies or a mismatch in required skills. Committee roles usually have a three-year tenure, so openings may be infrequent.
This outcome is not a reflection on your professional standing.
With your permission, we may retain your details for future opportunities and encourage you to apply again.
Our technical work is undertaken through a variety of individual technical committees and working groups who report to our overarching Technical Policy and Oversight Committee (TPOC), which reports to CIOT council.
You can find a list of our technical committees along with a chart showing our technical committee structure, a list of TPOC members and the guidelines under which our technical committees and working groups operate on our technical committees page.
