Ruth Mason is the Faculty Director of the Virginia Center for Tax Law at the University of Virginia. She is an internationally renowned researcher specialising in federalism and the dormant Commerce Clause and cross-border taxation. Her research has been cited by the US Supreme Court and in the Court of Justice of the European Union, and is published in major US law reviews, including the Yale Law Journal, California Law Review, NUY Law Review and Virginia Law Review. Her work has also featured in leading peer-reviewed specialty journals such as the Tax Law Review and British Tax Review. Ruth also contributes to Foreign Affairs and Tax Notes, as well as delivering lectures on tax topics internationally, from delivering the 2018 Amsterdam Distinguished Lecture in Taxation, to the 2023 IFA Canada Lecture on EU state aid.

Ruth has served as a visiting professor at several institutions, including Yale Law School, the University of Paris, the Vienna University of Economics and Business, and the International Bureau of Fiscal Documentation. She is also a member of the American Law Institute, and has represented the US for the International Fiscal Association.
