Dr Marius van Oordt is a former Associate Professor at the African Tax Institute (ATI) in the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences at the University of Pretoria, where he served from 2010 to June 2024 and taught at an undergraduate and postgraduate level.

In 2016 Dr van Oordt received his PhD in Tax Policy from the University of Pretoria, with a specialisation in indirect taxation. His work has focused on improving tax systems in developing countries through research, committee memberships with the United Nations, tax policy reforms with the International Monetary Fund, and collaboration with international institutes. To date, Dr van Oordt has assisted over 35 governments across Africa, Asia, the Americas, Europe, and Oceania in strengthening their indirect tax policies to improve economic and social outcomes.

Dr van Oordt's research is practically oriented and centres on value-added tax and excise policy. He has published widely in academic journals, authored chapters in international volumes, co-authored numerous IMF tax policy diagnostic reports, contributed chapters to United Nations handbooks, and disseminated his research through public platforms.
