HMRC One to Many letter – R&D tax credits in the retail sector
18 May 2025
HMRC have advised us about an OTM campaign for which the letters have recently been issued. The purpose of the project is to write to vulnerable companies in the retail sector and warn them about unscrupulous R&D agents seeking to misrepresent the tax relief schemes.
HMRC say that the aim is to protect businesses who have not yet made a claim for R&D but may be encouraged to do so by R&D agents in the future. The letter explains that while it is possible for a business in these sectors to claim R&D, HMRC think it is unlikely and the letter lists the common activities HMRC see claimed for that do not meet the requirements for R&D tax relief.
HMRC have said that we can share the letter.
