Email scams targeting agents
HMRC’s Digital Security Working Group has asked us to share a message about an increase in suspicious activity they have seen concerning email scams targeting agents:
The email claims to be from HMRC and asks the recipient to update their anti-money laundering supervision registration details.
To protect yourself from scams, access HMRC’s online services for tax agents by going directly to GOV.UK.
If you receive an unexpected phone call, text or email claiming to be from HMRC, don’t let yourself be rushed. Before sharing any personal information, take a moment to check GOV.UK to see if the contact is genuine.
How to tell if an email from HMRC is genuine
We will only ever email you from an email address that ends in gov.uk as can be seen in the following examples:
- @hmrc.gov.uk
- @tax.service.gov.uk
- @advice.hmrc.gov.uk
- @updates.hmrc.gov.uk
The gov.uk will only feature at the end of an email address, not in the middle.
How to report suspicious contact
If you’ve received a suspicious email, text or phone call please report it to HMRC by:
- forwarding text messages to 60599
- forwarding emails to [email protected]
- visiting GOV.UK to report a phone call
