Committee Member - Membership & Branches Committee
The Membership & Branches Committee, a standing committee of CIOT Council are looking for new volunteers to join their friendly committee which meets three times a year.
The primary role of this committee is to provide recommendations to Council on key issues related to the organisation's branch network, membership and member services.
The committee advises on matters such as the establishment, dissolution and geographical adjustments of branches, as well as changes to their administration.
The committee is tasked with implementing Council's strategy to grow or maintain membership numbers by promoting membership, Chartered Tax Adviser status and ADIT Affiliate status.
It also manages and develops the Joint Branch Network and works to enhance the benefits and services available to members and ADIT Affiliates.
As a committee member, you will play a role in shaping the direction and success of the Institute. It is important that you have a genuine interest, passion and care for the work of the committee, as your dedication will influence the effectiveness of our initiatives. Your commitment to these responsibilities will ensure that the committee's work aligns with the broader goals of the Institute and delivers tangible benefits to both the organisation and its members.

The committees oversees the work of Conferences Subcommittee, Joint Branches Subcommittee and The Future of Tax Professionals Committee as well as making recommendations to Council on exclusion for non-payment, supporting special projects such as the recent Membership Milestones Project and volunteers contribute their ideas to the Member Services Team as part of the Head Office Executive managing the member's journey, essentially we like to think of this committee helping members get in, get on and feel included!

2. Application Review
Your application form will be reviewed by the relevant committee chair and a member of staff/secretariat. We aim to match volunteers with opportunities that best suit their skills, interests, and experience, while also considering current needs and available voluntary roles.
3. Follow-Up Communication
The Chair or member of staff may contact you for further information or to discuss your application expression of interest form in more detail. This helps us ensure the best possible fit between you and the volunteer opportunity.
4. Outcome Notification
You will be notified of the outcome of your application expression of interest whether successful or not. We aim to do this within 4–6 weeks but timings may vary depending on the committee or opportunity applied for. you are interested in.
5. Getting Started
If you're application is successful, we will invite you to a meeting as an "observer" so that you can observe a meeting and decide whether or not it is the right fit for you and once you have "observed" a meeting you will be formally invited to join and can decide at that point whether you would like to become a member. You are then formally appointed at the next meeting.
6. Joining a committee/branch committee
Will involve you reading a few governance documents, you will also be introduced to the committee or at a meeting online or in person, and the secretariat will ask you to confirm which email address you wish to use and your permissions regarding sharing your preferred email address with other committee members.
7. There are rare occasions when members are unsuccessful when applying expressing their interest in a volunteer role, this may be due to a number of reasons:
a. There are no roles on the committee, tenure is normally three years, so vacancies do frequently arise but the succession can seem quite slow from a prospective volunteers perspective
b. The experience and skills the committee are looking for are not a good match with your own
c. Please be assured that an unsuccessful outcome does not reflect negatively on your professional standing or willingness to contribute. We may retain your details (with your permission) for future opportunities that better match your profile, and we encourage you to apply again as new voluntary roles arise.
