Contacting HMRC on tax return deadline day

In a change from earlier announcements, HMRC have today (28 January) confirmed that their self-assessment helpline WILL be open on the 31 January 2026 filing deadline, which this year falls on a Saturday.

HMRC are encouraging anyone yet to file to do so sooner rather than later. However, for those needing additional support on the deadline day, HMRC are providing:

• Enhanced webchat support 8am – 4pm
• Self-assessment phoneline support 9am – 4pm
• Online services helpdesk phoneline 9am – 4pm
• Extra support team callbacks for vulnerable customers

Note that the agent dedicated line will not be open.
