Audit and Risk Committee – Independent Chair Voluntary role
Are you a senior leader in finance, audit, risk, or governance looking for a meaningful volunteering opportunity? The Chartered Institute of Taxation (CIOT) and the Association of Taxation Technicians (ATT), leading UK educational charities, are seeking an Independent Chair for our Joint Audit and Risk Committee. Our mission is to create a more efficient and simplified tax system for everyone.
This is a vital leadership role, playing a critical part in stewarding both organisations' integrity and accountability. You will lead a committee known for its rigour, challenge, curiosity and collaboration, where risk registers are ‘living, breathing tools that genuinely inform decision-making’.
Who we are looking for
We welcome applicants from all backgrounds. You should have senior-level experience in finance, audit, risk management, or governance (e.g., finance director, auditor, Non-Executive Director). A strong understanding of charity financial reporting and risk oversight is essential, along with experience chairing meetings or providing leadership in a committee setting. We seek individuals with integrity, strategic vision, independent judgement and readiness to challenge constructively.
Time commitment
Approximately six to eight days per year. This is a voluntary, unpaid position.
Independence
To ensure the independence of the role, we unfortunately cannot accept applications from:
- Chartered Tax Advisers or Taxation Technicians
- Applicants who have been a trustee or employee of the Institute within the last five years
- Applicants who have, within the previous three years, had a business relationship with the Institute
- Applicants who have, or have had, a personal relationship or close family ties with any of the charities’ trustees or senior management.
How to apply
Submit your CV and a personal statement (max 1,500 words) by midnight on 10 October 2025 to Vicky Nicholas at [email protected]. Shortlisted applicants will be invited for interviews on 3, 4, 11 and 12 November 2025.
