Change to GOV.UK Sign-In Screen – Preparing for GOV.UK One Login
From 10 November 2025, customers signing into HMRC services will notice a new sign-in selector screen. This screen introduces an additional option: GOV.UK One Login, alongside the existing Government Gateway.
Examples of the screens can be seen further below.
This is part of HMRC’s preparation for moving to GOV.UK One Login, a secure, modern sign-in system that will eventually replace Government Gateway. GOV.UK One Login allows customers to sign in with an email address and password, instead of the 12-digit user ID associated with a Government Gateway.
This is not the full launch—customers cannot create a One Login for HMRC services yet and should continue using their Government Gateway sign-in details as usual.
Selecting GOV.UK One Login will redirect back to Government Gateway for now.
This early deployment is for testing and insight gathering only—it helps HMRC understand user behaviour and refine guidance ahead of the public launch of GOV.UK One Login for some HMRC customers early next year. Numbers will start off small and only new customers (who do not already have a Government Gateway) will be asked to create a GOV.UK One Login to start with.
What is GOV.UK One Login?
GOV.UK One Login is the long-term replacement for Government Gateway. It will offer customers a straightforward and secure way to prove their identify and access a range of government digital services using an email address and password.
GOV.UK One Login can currently be used to access some government services, but not HMRC services.
Once fully rolled out, GOV.UK One Login will be used to access all government digital services.
