Conference debates 2016: Tax and Inequality
Once again the Chartered Institute of Taxation (CIOT) and the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) are jointly organising debates during this year’s party conference season, this time on the question: ‘What role can the tax system play in tackling inequality?’
Liverpool – Monday 26 September
Birmingham – Monday 3 October
Glasgow – Saturday 15 October
Our aim is to help develop better informed tax and economic policy and greater understanding of the issues and constraints facing policy makers.
While aimed at those attending the conferences, these events are open to all. (Though note that you will require a party conference pass for the Glasgow event as it takes place in the conference secure zone.)
Attendance is free of charge and buffet lunch / refreshments will be served. It is not a requirement to register for these events, though it is helpful for catering and seating purposes to have an idea of numbers, so if you are thinking of attending we would be grateful if you could email [email protected] to let us know.

Labour conference, Liverpool
12.45-2pm, Monday 26 September
Venue: Room 10, Jurys Inn Hotel, 31 Keel Wharf, Liverpool L3 4FN (outside secure zone)
Speakers: Paul Johnson (Director of the Institute for Fiscal Studies), Anne Fairpo (Council Member and Past President of CIOT), Senior Labour representative (to be confirmed). Chair: Larry Elliott (Economics Editor, The Guardian).
Conservative conference, Birmingham
5.30-6.45pm, Monday 3 October
Venue: Jurys Inn Hotel, 245 Broad St, Birmingham B1 2HQ (room 101) (outside secure zone)
Speakers: Paul Johnson (Director of the Institute for Fiscal Studies), Bill Dodwell (President of the CIOT), Lord Leigh of Hurley (Conservative Party Senior Treasurer and Chartered Tax Adviser). Chair: Vanessa Houlder (Tax Correspondent, Financial Times).
SNP conference, Glasgow
12.30-1.30pm, Saturday 15 October
Venue: Alsh A, Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre (SECC), Exhibition Way, Glasgow G3 8YW (inside the secure zone – only conference pass holders will be able to attend)
