2020/21 income tax self-assessment filers incorrectly receiving HMRC nudge letters

6 Jan 2023

HMRC have recently been sending letters to taxpayers and agents about missing 2020/21 self assessment tax returns, reminding them to file the return and warning them about potential late filing penalties.

HMRC have advised us that, due to a mailing list error, some taxpayers and their agents have received a letter, when in fact they had no returns outstanding and their tax affairs were up to date. HMRC have temporarily stopped sending these reminder letters while they investigate the issue further.

HMRC have confirmed that taxpayers who have filed their tax returns on time will not receive any late filing penalties. Therefore, if you or any of your clients have received one of these letters and you are certain that the relevant return was filed on time, you do not need to take any action.
