August 2017

Hello and Welcome

Hello and welcome to the latest edition of the CTA student newsletter for all news on key updates and ongoing essential information within the Institute. I hope 2017 is treating you well so far.

Firstly congratulations to those who were successful in the May 2017 exams – very well done. If you did not get the results that you hoped for then please do take a look at the Examiners' reports on our website.

The deadline for entering for the November 2017 exams, should you be eligible, is the last day of August.

For those candidates who want/need extra training for the exams, this September we will be holding Training Days in London and online, and for the first time we will be holding an online webinar for the Advisory Advanced Corporation Tax paper, as well as the Application and Interaction paper. These will provide you with valuable tips and information on exam technique to assist you in the CTA examinations.

Our technical article this month is tips on how to pass an Advisory paper by Nitin Rabheru.

We appreciate feedback on our newsletters and welcome any suggestions at studenttraining [at] - we would really like to hear from you.

Yours sincerely

Rosalind Baxter
Director of Education

VAT Practitioners Group (VPG)

CTA Indirect Tax Route Students

For students on the Indirect Tax route, the VPG can be a source of information and an informal place to ask questions and discuss technical issues. The meetings could enable you to get more context and a broader knowledge of VAT in tandem with the studying. It may also be a source of networking, which for some can be invaluable when starting out in a career. There are branches all over UK which regularly hold events.

The website below has more details as to how to join, or for more information on the VPG in general:

Professional Responsibilities and Ethics Manual

The manual for the Professional Responsibilities and Ethics is being updated this year. It will include the new Continuing Professional Development (CPD) regulations, which came into force on 1 January 2017 and the changes that have been made to Professional Conduct in Relation to Taxation (PCRT) relating to guidance on tax planning.

The current 3rd edition of the Ethics manual will be examinable up to 28 February 2018. This is currently available to purchase on the website for £45.

The new 4th edition of the Ethics manual will be available to purchase on the website from mid-October 2017 and will be examinable after 1 March 2018.

A revised mock exam will be available on the website on 1 March 2018, for those who will be sitting their CBE after the 4th edition of the manual becomes examinable.
