New year honours – Emma Chamberlain recognised

The CIOT congratulates Emma Chamberlain on her OBE for services to government tax policy, which was announced in the new year honours last weekend.

Emma is a Chartered Tax Adviser and a barrister at Pump Court Tax Chambers. She is a member of the CIOT Council, a former chair of the Institute’s Capital Taxes technical sub-committee and continues to sit on the Institute’s CGT and Investment Income, and Succession Taxes sub-committees.

She will probably be best known to practitioners as co-author of books such as Trust Taxation and Estate Planning, and Dymond’s Capital Taxes, as well as a regular contributor to Tax Adviser and the wider tax press.

Particular areas of tax policy that Emma has contributed to, making highly complex areas more workable in practice, include:  Pre-Owned Asset Tax, the Statutory Residence Test, the current reforms to the code for Non-Domiciles, and harmonising the rules to achieve a more coherent code across the taxes for trusts for disabled persons.

CIOT President Bill Dodwell has congratulated Emma on what he called: “A thoroughly deserved recognition of your contribution to tax policy over many years.”

The CIOT also congratulates Mike Williams, Director of Business and International Tax at the Treasury, on his appointment as a Companion of the Order of the Bath

This award recognises Mike’s substantial contribution to global tax policy – most recently on the BEPS project and the Multilateral Instrument flowing from it (Mike chaired the ad hoc OECD Group which developed the instrument).
