CIOT and IFS Online Debate: VAT and Customs Duties after Brexit
Join us on Tuesday 8 December 2020 | 11:30 - 13:00 (GMT)

On 31 December the Brexit transition period will come to an end and the UK will leave the EU single market and customs union. What does this mean for VAT and customs duties? What will change? Will it be smooth or chaotic? Which business sectors will be most affected? How will Northern Ireland be different? What difficulties remain unresolved? What difference will it make if we strike a last-minute trade deal with the EU?

Looking further ahead, where are the UK VAT and customs regimes likely to go in the years ahead? Will VAT be simplified or complicated? Are tariffs likely to go up or down?

Our expert panel will explore these and other questions in this highly topical debate.

Our Panel:
Mike Cunningham | Deputy Director, VAT & Excise, HM Treasury
Chris Giles | Economics Editor. Financial Times
Daniel Lyons | Head of Tax Policy, Deloitte UK
Barbara Scott | Chair, Customs Practitioners Group
Peter Rayney (chair) | President (from 17 November), Chartered Institute of Taxation

This online event is free to join and open to all with an interest in the topic. If you have colleagues or friends who might also enjoy the discussion do please tell them about it.
The format will be short speeches / presentations from panellists followed by a discussion, with the opportunity for audiance members to make comments and put questions.
