Article by Ray Chiddell, author, 'Company Cars: Practical Tax Planning'. This article appeared in the January 2007 issue of Tax Adviser. Employers providing company cars or vans know that decisions taken now will typically affect employee tax liabilities (and employer National Insurance costs) for three or four years to come. In practice, looking so far ahead is never easy; a few specific changes to the tax rules are usually in the pipeline but these are often accompanied by official or semi-official predictions of other likely developments.
Despite promises earlier in the year, December's pre-budget report provided almost no new detail at all. Nevertheless, it did give several indications that the next budget will herald a number of new policies in this field. The author will summarise here the changes that we know to be taking place, and also provide some pointers as to other developments that can be predicted with reasonable confidence.
