The management of tax risk - part 1

Category Technical Articles
AuthorLisa Herd
An article by Robin Godman, Senior Tax Adviser for a major international oil company, taking a look at how to identify and manage your tax-risk exposure.

This article appeared in the March 2006 issue of Tax Adviser. Nowadays, anything to do with management seems to be at risk of becoming bogged down in jargon, bandwagons that have passed by before you know it, and fashion. Taxation, on the other hand, although prone to complexity and bad drafting, is reasonably free of such afflictions. But inevitably, there is some overlap, and something that most practitioners will probably view as new on the block is the topic of tax-risk management. Certainly, if the number of conferences and utterances from the major accounting and law firms is anything to go by, this has got to be the latest 'big thing'. So what is it, how does it arise, and where do we go from here?
