Article by Ian Luder, CIOT President 1994-1995. This article appeared in the December 2005 issue of Tax Adviser. 'I thought that the top rate of tax was 40%. How come I am effectively paying 44% on my earnings?' How many times have we as advisers had to explain the 'reverse tax gap' to business clients? We may not have called it by that name - but that is what it is - a system by which tax is exacted on more income than actually exists.
