The Chartered Institute of Taxation (CIOT) will relaunch its TaxTalking initiative, which is a resource for tax learning, on Wednesday 13 December with a new-look website. John Cullinane, CIOT President, says: “I am very proud of our commitment to educate young people about tax and so am particularly excited by the relaunch of TaxTalking. The new activities and lessons created with Arsenal Football Club can all be completed on the website interactively and really help pupils get a far better grasp of what tax is all about.”
The TaxTalking materials contain four activities that deal with understanding a pay slip, comparing the PAYE tax liabilities and entitlements to child tax credit and working tax credit of four different individuals, looking at the amount of money raised by the Government from different taxes and how it is spent, and dealing with the moral issues of tax.
The Arsenal educational initiative gives children a grounding in basic tax concepts.
Rob Ellerby, CIOT Deputy President, says: “It was fascinating to develop a lesson teaching tax in this way. Arsenal Football Club is doing very interesting work in its local community, teaching numeracy and literacy, and it was a pleasure to contribute to the success of this project.”
The aim of the TaxTalking teaching materials is to encourage young people to think about the role of tax in society. They are specifically designed to meet the Key Stages 3 and 4 of the National Curriculum. TaxTalking will also actively support the Challenge the Chancellor Competition, which is run by Bournemouth University with the support of the CIOT.
