Nappy tax wins Challenge the Chancellor competition A nappy tax is this year’s winner of The Chartered Institute of Taxation’s Challenge the Chancellor competition for “A” level pupils. A team from Malvern Girls College suggested the tax as an incentive to encourage parents to switch to more environmentally-friendly non-disposable nappies. The tax would fund doorstep laundering of non-disposables and research into less environmentally damaging disposables.
Peter Kempster, CIOT President, says: “Once again there was a very high standard of entries for the annual competition. It is fascinating to see the ideas coming from pupils on tax.”
The pupils were asked to suggest a new tax and explain why they would introduce it.
Peter Kempster adds: “The Challenge the Chancellor competition is an important part of the CIOT’s commitment to educating the young about tax and encouraging a future Chancellor of the Exchequer.”
The members of the Malvern Girls College team are Charlotte Allan, Kim Harris, Sarah Lim and Aisha Bello.
The team will be awarded their prize on Wednesday 26 April at the House of Commons by Dawn Primarolo, the Paymaster-General.
