An unprecedented alliance of Government bodies, the ‘Big Four’ firms, medium sized firms and professional bodies have united in a bid to promote careers in tax to young people. To achieve this goal the TaxWorking initiative has launched a website, www.TaxWorking.org, that provides one place where young people can find out about employers and the range of careers in tax.
The 17 founding members are:
- The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA)
- BDO Stoy Hayward
- The Chartered Institute of Taxation (CIOT)
- Deloitte
- Ernst & Young
- Grant Thornton
- HM Customs & Excise
- HM Treasury
- The Inland Revenue
- The Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales (ICAEW)
- The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland (ICAS)
- The Institute of Indirect Taxation (IIT)
- KPMG
- Morley & Scott Accounting
- PricewaterhouseCoopers
- The Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP)
The Group wants membership of TaxWorking to expand to include all professional firms and industry and commerce that offer careers in tax as well as the representative bodies that help young people move into the tax profession.
John Whiting, on behalf of TaxWorking, said:
“This initiative invites young people to look at a subject they may never have considered before because tax has an undeserved reputation as narrow and boring. TaxWorking will show people that tax offers all kinds of interesting job prospects and, undoubtedly, scope for financial reward! I welcome this scheme as I feel it will open up a hidden door of opportunity to a whole range of people with different qualifications.”
The TaxWorking Group is aiming to dispel misconceptions about careers in tax. Tax is at the very centre of the political debate and provides many exciting and engaging career options. These opportunities also range across both the private and public sectors, which not only offers the chance to learn varied skills but also offers access to every industry. The TaxWorking Group will build on the launch of the website to promote a better understanding of the tax profession and highlight the scope of opportunities available in tax.
