CIS Voucher Issue, Replenishment and Completion

How does the issue and replenishment of vouchers actually work?
All vouchers are personalised with a unique serial number and we issue them according to how many you expect to use on a monthly basis. If you think the number of vouchers you are sent (whether too many or too few) is incorrect you should let us know.

We then place you into what is known as a “voucher profile band” that tells us how many vouchers to send you each time and when we should send them.

If you are a contractor, you send us the top copies of all vouchers you handle. Our system can then work out roughly how many vouchers you, or your subcontractors, still have. As soon as we think your stocks, or those of your subcontractors, are getting low, we send you some more without you having to ask.

To make this work smoothly, if you are a contractor, it is very important that you send all completed vouchers to us as soon as possible, otherwise we don’t know that you or your subcontractors need any more. It is also very important that you let us know if you are going to change your address. We need to amend our records in time to prevent your next supply of vouchers being sent to the wrong address.

If you ‘spoil’ any of your own vouchers, whether you’re a subcontractor or a contractor, you must tell us on form CIS52 that we include with each pack of vouchers that we send you. It does not matter whether you have completed them incorrectly by mistake or they have become damaged by mistake. We need to know about these so we can take them into account when working out how many vouchers you have used.

What do I do if I run out of vouchers?

Contact your tax office. They will send you more and will also check that you are in the right profile band for the future. An additional supply of vouchers will take up to 10 working days to be produced before they are issued to you.

Where can I get further help on completing the vouchers?

In every pack of vouchers we send you there is a coloured sheet labelled CIS81.
This shows you what goes where when completing any of the CIS vouchers.

If you need any further help, please ring our Contractor’s Helpline on 0845 7 33 55 88 or the Subcontractor’s Helpline on 0845 3000 581.
